After the conquest of Badajoz in 1230 by Alfonso IX of León, the alcazaba was the political center of the city, with the religious, military and civil institutions of the time. Wars and periods of abandonment ruined most of the old buildings inside the fortress. The upper part of the hill of La Muela was occupied by the Muslim medina, housed in the noble area of the town (palaces, mosque, baths, etc.). But this was later razed, being occupied first by the Hospital de Rey and later by the Military Hospital, currently housed the Library of Extremadura and a University Faculty.

The houses attached to the wall, between the Alpendiz gate and the remains of the Church of Calatrava, always attracted attention. Around 1465 a nobleman from the city, Hernán Gomez de Solís, Duke of Feria, gathered a series of properties located next to the Encomienda de Calatrava, erecting a powerful Strong House that incorporated the defenses of the Alpendiz gate and part of the wall. One of its entrances (in another location), underground rooms and other scattered and semi-deride outbuildings is preserved from this palatial elements.

On this line you can see the exterior buildings that were part of this manor house of the Gomes de Solís. below them, you can see different images of the subways of these dependencies.

Upstairs, perspective from the tower of the Acevedos, towards the tower of Scarecrow and Plaza Alta, in the image on the left. On the right you can see the Albarrana towers that overlook the squares of Marín de Rodezno and San José. In the background, the modern city.

From the noble area of the old Andalusian city of Bataylus, only the remains of the palatial area of the city have appeared. These were razed with the new constructions after the conquest of the city, the construction of the Hospital de Rey and later the Military Hospital in the mid-19th century. The modernization of the defenses of the city, originated the embankment of the lands in this same place, razing and covering the old witnesses of history.
